Developing a Plan Based on Your Dreams
Key Learnings
- People living with disability should have choice and control
- Playing an active role in shaping your life helps you reach your vision
- You plan should include supports and resources that fit into your vision
In topic 1 we looked at how to build your vision to live your best life.
It's important for people living with disability to have choice and control over their lives. This begins with working out what we want our best lives to look like, including where we want to live, who we want to hang out with, where we want to work, and most importantly, what we want to spend our time doing. These details make up a vision for our lives.
To build this vision we must access the right supports and resources and put a plan in place. Let’s explore how to start the planning process.
To begin, look back at the questions you’ve thought about so far by considering your overall vision from the previous topic. You may have written down goals you would like to achieve and where you would like to see yourself in the future. The specifics will be unique to everyone and will likely include a range of components, such as:
- having a home of your own
- exploring education and ways of gaining new skills
- having a job or making a meaningful contribution
- having opportunities for growth and development that challenge you
Based on your vision, you will be able to set clear goals. If you applying to the NDIS, these goals will also be useful on your NDIS pathway. When you first gain access to the NDIS you will be asked to set goals that will be placed in your NDIS Plan. You can then look at these goals and work out what unique supports and resources you will need to achieve them.
