The types of support people living with disability have in their lives generally falls into two categories:
NDIS funded supports include paid workers who agree to provide the support you need in the way you want. This can include:
Informal supports are provided by family and friends. These can include:
If you need supports in your life from people on a daily basis there are several ways the NDIS funds these supports. You can use the funds in your core budget to pay for support workers when you need them, through the Assistance with Daily Life and Assistance with Social and Community Participation funding in your plan.
There are two ways the NDIS provide packages of funded support - Supported Individual Living (SIL) and Individualised Living Options (ILO).
SIL involves assistance with daily living supports for people who generally live in shared accommodation (usually called group homes) together with other people with high support needs. The support funds are given directly to the provider. Although some people still live in group homes, this model of housing is no longer considered to be desirable or appropriate.
ILO includes the option to live where and with who you want. This person-centred approach means you can access funded and informal supports in the home and community where you choose to live. You may also choose to use funds for assistive technology and home modifications so you can live more independently.
