In this section of the workshop we will:
We will also look at why it's so important for people with disability to be given the right to choose!
Check out this clip as an example of how different things are for people when they are treated with dignity and respect and get access to the supports they need to do things they want.
Getting the right supports can help you achieve your vision. It starts with identifying and understanding the importance of your goals. Goals help you plan your best life but also help communicate what you want to your allies and supporters.
In this clip, people share ideas of what a good life means to them.
You heard a lot of ideas about what makes a good life, but what makes a GOOD LIFE for you?
After finishing this tab - Bringing Your Vision to Life - go back and look at the answers to all the questions you have collected so far, and really think about the things you want in your life.
When building a good life, one of the first things to think about is 'who will be on your team?'
Your team members are people who will help you work toward and achieve your vision. When selecting your team you should consider:
The answers to these questions will depend on who you have around you and your relationship with them. It will also depend on the type of support you are asking for. When asking for help it's best to be as clear as possible and explain:
These questions and discussions will be different for each person, depending on their individual visions, and what they feel comfortable with.
Let’s look at some possible supports and allies:
Unpaid allies:
family and friends, mob, work mates, neighbours, community members…
Paid supports:
support workers, support coordinators, agencies, therapists, mentors, life coaches…
Mainstream allies:
Employment, health, school contacts, Uni team members, people at local shops…
Peer supports:
Local peer support network members and facilitators…
Have you got any of these supports in place? Are there any that you want or would like to have in your life? We will cover who will be part of your team in a lot of detail in workshops 2 and 3.
Whoever you choose to include in your team, it is important they focus on helping you achieve your goals. The goals you would like to work toward should also be written down in your NDIS plan. We will continue to discuss these points in more detail as we move through the rest of the workshops.
